Manchester United's Museum and Tour Centre at Old Trafford has been recognised for its commitment to ‘green business' with a recent award from not-for-profit sustainability accreditation programme, Green Tourism.
Achieving the highest standard GOLD accolade the award winning tourist attraction has worked to increase sustainability across the business - from the kitchen to the stadium.
Every aspect of the building and management has implemented new practices to ensure savings are met on energy usage, wastage costs and bills.
Increased work within the local community has also contributed to the sustainable grading award, as the tourist attraction delivers outreach programmes in local primary schools focusing on ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' - inviting local children, either as a class or as a whole school, to the stadium to learn more about the ‘green' projects and, in some cases, take part in a sponsored litter pick.
The ‘green team' at the Manchester United Museum & Tour Centre believes in heavily promoting all green initiatives to visitors, schools, employees and partners and have now introduced part of its stadium tour to include information on rainwater harvesting and recycling and all education sessions include information on the Club's ‘Reds Go Green' scheme.
Commenting on the award, Damian Preston, Museum Manager said: "We are constantly striving to improve our sustainability efforts so this is great recognition for the business as a whole. We take our commitment to Green Tourism and sustainability very seriously and the Museum Green Team works very hard to educate the hundreds of thousands of visitors who come to our attraction every year. Educating our visitors and making a difference to the community are two of the main reasons we decided to embark on our journey with Green Tourism and we are very proud of our continued success and our ongoing relationship with them."
Jon Proctor, CEO of Green Tourism commented: "The Green team at Old Trafford have worked tirelessly to ensure they achieve a GOLD award this year - implementing innovative ideas as well as ongoing improvement of day-to-day sustainable practices. The museum and tour centre is a fantastic example for other visitor attractions to follow, particularly in regards to its education and community programmes."
